AJWS Sudan Relief and Advocacy Fund
Since 2003, rebel elements in the western region of Sudan, Darfur, have been struggling against the government-funded militia group, the Janjaweed. This conflict is another aspect of the Sudan’s war-torn history. Since it’s independence in 1956, Sudan has been divided by a civil war between the Christian and animist southern region and the Arab-Muslim northern region (where the capital, Khartoum, is located.) The more recent genocide in Darfur (where the black Muslim population is being victimized) is more reason to believe that Sudan needs to undergo a fundamental adjustment in order to become a stable location. Only then will the estimated 2.5 million refugees be able to return to their homes.
In this vein, WashU’s Challah for Hunger chapter donates half of our profits to the AJWS Sudan Relief and Advocacy Fund, an organization devoted, not only to aiding people in refugee camps by bringing them such essentials as medical and food aid, but also to lobbying in the United States and other countries for leaders to put pressure on the Sudanese government and rebel factions. With their cooperation, so long absent from negotiations, hopefully a long-term peace can be brokered in this war-torn region.
The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry
With the remaining half of our profits, WashU’s Challah for Hunger chapter has decided to try to help in the fight against hunger. Missouri among the ten states with the highest rates of food insecurity in the United States. 12.3% of the general population and 20% of the under 18 population in Missouri is food insecure. These figures align closely with the state’s poverty rate. Hunger is a problem that not only affects individuals, but also affects the population as a whole. People who cannot afford food cannot prioritize work and thus become unable to contribute to the economic wellbeing of the community. To fight this trend as well as to reach a helping hand to our neighbors in need, we have chosen to donate the second half of our profit to the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry.
