New Orleans Jewish Day School

Challah for Hunger-NOJDS is a new student club that aims to bring awareness of hunger related issues through the production and sale of challah bread. Fifty percent of the our profits will be donated to the American Jewish World Services Sudan Relief and Advocacy Fund and the other fifty percent will be donated to MAZON, a national Jewish agency committed to fighting hunger. Our goal is to provide a sense of pride in performing Tikkun Olam to our students and the entire New Orleans Jewish community. Synagogues and community organizations are invited to host a challah baking at their facility or sponsor the cost of ingredients for one week.

Sales Details:

Our chapter will bake challah Thursday afternoons and sell on Friday. The Day School parents can purchase challah through the monthly form that will be sent home with students. Other members of the community can order challah online at www.challahforhunger.org The cost is $4 for a plain challah and $5 for raisin or other flavors. Check back for our flavor of the week and fun holiday flavors!

Organizations our chapter supports:

The Day School students decided to donate our profits to MAZON, a national organization committed to fighting hunger. The students felt that they wanted as many people as possible to benefit from their donation. MAZON's mission statement is: To educate and raise the consciousness of the Jewish community regarding its obligation to alleviate hunger and its causes; To make donating a portion of the cost of life cycle events (historically at least 3%) to MAZON a permanent tradition in Jewish life; and To provide for people who are hungry while at the same time advocating for other ways to end hunger and its causes.
